Change

The summer flew by, and all too quickly the school year came.

The weekend before school started, Jason decided to host the annual summer celebration. The seniors in Beaumont had been throwing this party for years; it was meant to be a big “goodbye” to the summer.

Lily spent most of that day out at the lake . She still hadn’t actually ‘seen’ anyone, but had mostly made peace with that.

She returned to the house with enough time to get ready and arrive at Jason’s house early to help with any final set-up.

Leaving her room in a forest green cap-sleeved dress, Lily was confident her appearance perfectly fit her role as girlfriend to the host. The dress had an empire waist and ruching at the chest, both details that flattered her thin frame. She’ d left her hair curly again tonight.

Richard emerged from the study to use the restroom as Lily descended the stairs; since the night in the kitchen he’d been letting her see him drinking more often. Lily didn't know why, but didn’t think it wa s a good development. He was already half-drunk and looking miserable, and had to keep a hand on the doorframe when he stopped to look up. Upon seeing Lily in her party outfit, his eyes got hard and he glared accusingly (a new favorite expression of his).

Lily had to listen carefully to make out the last few words as they trailed off into silence. “You think I’m gonna… to let you out … house … wearing that?”

Once Lily figured out the question, she looked down at her dress in confusion, “What’s wrong with it?”

Richard made a rude noise, “Other than the fact that it’s missing half? It’ll give a boy ideas … or was that your plan?”

Lily started to reply that the dress was perfectly modest, but then realization dawned on her . Richard, a drunk who could barely function, was trying to give her rules on how to live.

Instead of trying to explain herself , Lily half laughed in response, “Are you serious? Now you’re going to take an interest?”

She took a step further down, but Richard stumbled to the banister and ordered in a hard voice, “Change.”

All the humor left, and Lily was immediately incensed.

She practically spit out the words, “All of a sudden you care about my modesty? You really think that you can spend years ignoring me, caring nothing about my life and my choices, and then all of a sudden start telling me what I can and cannot wear? You’ve got to be kidding me! That’s not going to happen! Deal with it.”

Lily was so angry she stomped down the rest of the stairs and steamed right toward the door, intending to storm out and try to forget this entire episode. Richard caught her arm before she could make her escape, and wrenched her back inside.

“I am your father, and you will listen to me.”

Lily was furious, and it made her reckless; she glared right into his eyes a nd yelled, “You haven’t behaved like my father since the night mom died.
